Tips from Cris's years researching and reporting on candidates for local races:

1. Google them. These days, you can also get a good start with ChatGPT, too. This is ONLY your starting place. Get your general idea and then dig deeper. 

2. Sluth in the same way you would anyone else you're curious about. You're not judging them as people; you are getting to know them as people.

   1. Look at headlines with their names in the past 10 years. 

   2. Look at their social media accounts. Do they practice what they preach? Who are they following?  

   3. Check their LinkedIn and scroll through their profile. You'll learn a lot about what has led them to this race.

   4. Check public records. Harris County and Houston courts have online databases, where you can see the basics. 

   5. Check their campaign websites. Does what you see there align with what you found in other places?

   6. Look at the Google images tab. There's usually a few websites that didn't come up in the main search.

3. Attend a forum or event that they are hosting or invited to. This season, the candidates are EVERYWHERE! Get on their email lists and follow their socials. Most will tell you how to be in the same room.

Do a little at a time. With 14 candidates in this race, a Congressional District 18 race with a dozen candidates, AND 17 state constitutional amendments 👀, you have a LOT to review. Use the hour that you would spend scrolling social media or reading a book.
